Unlock Your Magical Self with the Power of the Witches Square

March 6th, 2007

You know the circle password, “Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.” You know the Wiccan Rede, “An it harm none, do what thou will.” When you combine them, they form the Witches Square, the key to unlocking your magical life.

The Witches Square states, “Perfect Love, Perfect Trust, Discipline and Will.” It forms the quadrants that help you to maintain the balance to transcend your present situation and unlocks the power to do anything that you find fulfilling.

Perfect Love

Perfect Love is where all things begin. All journeys and tasks must come from a foundation of love because it’s the creative force in the universe. Without love, nothing can exist. Your life began with an act of love between your parents.

To bring Perfect Love into your life, you need to start with yourself. You must perfectly love yourself before you can love another perfectly. There are many techniques for working on this, which we will get into more in future posts.

After you have Perfect Love for yourself, then work to love others perfectly. Love a pet or a wild animal perfectly. Accept them unconditionally, no matter what they do to your couch.

Then love other people. This is done by compassion. Feel compassion for the people you pass on the street. Feel compassion for the homeless person you see. Feel compassion for those you revile.

When you are able to feel compassion and love for all people, then expand that further to the whole of creation. Feel love for not just the beautiful sunsets and rainbows, but also for the volcano that erupts and destroys a forest or village. Feeling love for all of creation allows you to connect to it on a spiritual level.

Perfect Trust

After Perfect Love is formed, Perfect Trust follows. One way to think of this is to think about when you were a toddler. You were born out of love. You grew into a toddler, who completely trusted everything others told you. Adults, especially your parents could never be wrong in your eyes. Magically, this relates to perfectly trusting your holy parents, your Gods and Goddesses.

In my prison ministry, there are many inmates who prefer to enter a circle with “Perfect Peace” instead of Perfect Trust. They don’t trust their fellow inmates, which is reasonable considering what many of them did to wind up in prison. The problem with this is that Peace does not equal Trust. Trust is in the Witches Square for a reason and to simply substitute it because you don’t feel comfortable does not make you a better witch.

Like Perfect Love, Perfect Trust is not something that just happens in a day. It takes time and effort to develop it. But you enter a circle with Perfect Trust because that is the goal, even if you don’t feel that way right now.

The first step to developing Perfect Trust is to trust yourself. You must build up confidence in yourself that you have the personal power to change. You must trust yourself to do what is right for you in the circumstances you’re in. Just having Perfect Trust for yourself is immensely empowering. In a future post, we will go into more detail about how to develop Perfect Trust for yourself.

After you trust yourself perfectly, you need to work on building trust in other people. This is very difficult, even if you are not in prison. You need to think about Perfect Trust as faith. To have faith in someone else is to know in your heart that they are acting with the best of intentions for their situation. It might not be to your benefit, but in their eyes, they are doing the best they can in life.

You need to see that if someone hurts you, it is either because they thought they were doing something good and the pain was an accident, or they don’t know how to act with love. This is common because most people lack Perfect Love, even for themselves. They are lost. If you see their actions from this perspective, you will see less and less true malevolence in others. People are not evil, but mistaken and confused.

Once you see this, you need to maintain your Perfect Love for them so you don’t feel superior to them. The corners of the Witches Square are cumulative and you need to maintain the past ones while working on the current corner.

When you feel Perfect Trust for other people, the next step is to have Perfect Trust for the universe. This is essentially having faith in the Gods and in Nature. When you go through each day knowing in your heart that the Gods are watching and helping you, then you can have Perfect Trust in Them. This level of faith brings immense peace into your life because you know you will never have to worry, even when things appear very dark.

Discipline is the focus and effort to work each day toward your long-term goals, whether magical or mundane. The first part of the Wiccan Rede, “An it harm none,” corresponds to Discipline.

When you do something with a foundation of Discipline, Perfect Trust and Perfect Love, you will work from a standpoint that will do as little harm as possible to others and yourself. If you are building a path with Discipline, you won’t just drive it through whatever places you wish, but instead, you will direct it through the ways that harm the least. Those who are harmed will be less harmed than otherwise, too, because of your conscious Discipline.

If you lack Discipline, as most people do, you are unable to accomplish anything. Many Pagans can feel Perfect Love and Perfect Trust for all things, but if they lack Discipline, they will simply sit on their meditation mat and feel Love and Trust. They won’t actually do anything. Look back to the hippie movement of the 1960s and 70s. They had a lot of love and trust, but as a whole, they lacked Discipline to focus their efforts on the things that really mattered to them. They either “dropped out” or they fought so many different causes that they burned themselves out before finishing anything that they set out to do.

Magically, Discipline is the Labor of Preparation. If you wish to perform a spell, you need to plan ahead. What exactly is the intent of the spell? What herbs, stones, candles, etc. would be most beneficial to this intent? How do you go about acquiring them? All of this is Discipline. If you just jump into a spell without doing your Labor of Preparation, the odds of it working are strongly against you, because you didn’t focus your energy enough.

In the mundane world, Discipline is important as well. At work, you need the Discipline to focus on your assigned tasks. At home, you need to focus on your home, family, friends, etc. If you lack Discipline in your mundane life, you will tend to find yourself ineffective and powerless to accomplish any of your goals.

Finally, the Witches Square is completed with Will. The Wiccan Rede states, “do what thou will.” Will means your True Will, your Destiny. It does not mean your “want” or your “wish.” You may want to go out and do something crazy, but if it is not your destiny, then it is not your Will.

In order to do your Will, you need to know what it is. What is it that you were born to this earth to do? Abrahamic followers will put it as “God’s Purpose” for you. The difference between us and the Abrahamics is that witches don’t have a god that dictates his will to us as our own. Instead, we have free will and we are free to realize what it is and even change it if we must.

When you act in accordance with your Will, even the most banal tasks take on a sacred feeling of fulfillment. You will feel truly happy to your core. In addition, when you perform your Will, you will see the positive changes you create in the world. In a future post, we will explore ways to learn about your Will.

The Witches Square

When you combine Perfect Love, Perfect Trust, Discipline and Will together in that order, you create the Witches Square. Living each day in accordance with all four corners, in equal balance, is difficult but extremely fulfilling.

The thing to remember is that it is not a simple four-step process that you do once and are done. It is a spiral, like anything else in the universe.

Notice how willful a toddler is. If they see something interesting, they will push, shove, bite and yell too get it. They know what they want and they are going to do it. They do have a sense of their Will, which is expressing itself. Since they are but a toddler, it is being expressed in a very immature and rudamentary way. This illustrates how the toddler, after gaining Will, must learn Perfect Love.

It also shows how upon knowing and performing in accordance with your Will, you must not forget the other three corners. Instead, you need to start over. When someone knows Will but stops there, they will tend to boss others around and drive their ambitions regardless of the consequences. They need to start over with Perfect Love, but from their new vantage point.

When you begin again, it is like the Hero’s Journey in tarot. Upon completing the World (or Universe), you return to the Fool, but on a higher level. When you know your True Will, you return to learn how to do that Will with Perfect Love for yourself, others and the universe. Then add Perfect Trust and Discipline. When you have achieved the new level of Discipline, your previous Will will be fulfilled and you will realize that there is more to do. Your Will evolves to a higher level as you see a bigger picture.

The journey of the Witches Square does not ever end. It is a journey of the Spiral Path, ever higher. Each step along the way gradually unlocks your magical potential.

By living the Witches Square, you blend your magical and mundane lives until they are complete and whole. At that point, your whole life is magic.

Well said. I find that in my Journey that my ability to manifest Perfect Love is continuely being agumented with each passing day. It’s a Journey that will force me to face sides of myself that I might not want to acknowledge, but its also a Journey that I partake of with joy. Thank you so much for this article. May the Goddesses and Gods continue to inspire and manifest Themselves in your life.

    Brightest Blessings,

You are quite correct in that walking the journey toward Perfect Love forces one to face sides of oneself that are difficult. I have found that to be the most challenging, and rewarding, part about it.

    Blessed be.

i loved the article about how to unlock your magical self with the witches square. But i was wondering are their any other adorations that someone can do besides the ones on the “3 steps to loving yourself perfectly” link?

  5. Morninghawk Says:

I am planning a series that will unfold over time covering each of the aspects of the Witches Square. The Loving Yourself article is only the second installment (with this article on the Witches Square being the first).

Additionally, hopefully other people will post their ideas in the comments to the articles. If you find any (or do any yourself), feel free to post them!

    Thanks for the comment.

i love the article. it takes you step by step on how to build your witches square. and it tells you that these steps never end that after you complete will you have to start all over again but on a higher level than what you were on when you started. but i would love to know what (and this makes me seem really slow) the Celestial Fire is?

  7. Morninghawk Says:

No, it doesn’t make you seem slow. There is no such thing as a dumb question.

The Celestial Fire is a fire given generally by a fire goddess. In Greek, the Celestial Fire is the Fire of Hestia (the goddess of hearth and home). In Roman, it’s the Vestial Fire. In the Irish tradition, the fire is from Brigid and in British, it’s from Brigantia.

It is the ritual fire that is lit in sacred spaces, the fire of the hearth and the fire of the forge.

The way I draw the Celestial Fire into myself is to imagine the fire rising up from the Earth below me. I feel the heat in my feet. Then it works its way up my whole body until I am filled with its warmth.

Hopefully this helps answer your question.

from happening if I wack my pointer finger I can get anything I want and dissapeare to any place I want.
