Hymn to Iris

August 3rd, 2008

My wife, Bella Sundancer, wrote a hymn to Lady Iris. Iris is the messenger goddess of the rainbow, carrying messages between the realms. Here is her hymn.

Hymn to Iris

Hail Iris, Lady of many colours
The rainbow is your path, your playground,
Your slide, your road to happiness
You nurture our feelings, define our emotions,
Encompass our moods, broaden our natures
As messenger, you run fleet-footed
From Olympos to Earth and back
And forth and back and forth
Hermes would find you no stranger
So similar are your duties to his
Both of messages, both of travel
Both of laughter, both of marvels
Yet you are the rainbow, Lady of dew-drop splendour
You descend from the mist and clouds
To bring us the word of the gods
You are she of the playful smile
She of the welcome winsome ways
You are herald and harbinger
Bringer of all news
Words fall from your stately mouth like rain
Wherever the gods send you will go
Traipsing gently down to give the message
Lady of many hues, we ask for your blessing
In things that can be sent, messages, travel, and emotions
